Welshpool woman running London Marathon for Children with Cancer UK

A WELSHPOOL woman is to run her third London Marathon after being inspired by two young men who have overcome cancer.

Bev Roberts, a volunteer instructor at Welshpool Young Fire Fighters, will take part in the gruelling 26.2 mile run to raise funds and awareness for Children with Cancer UK.

Her previous two efforts, in 2006 and 2008, saw her raise thousands of pounds for Cystic Fibrosis following the death of her close friend Sally Watkins to the illness in May 2005, but this year she has opted to concentrate her fundraising efforts on a different charity.

?Sally will of course be close to my thoughts on the big day but this year I have been inspired to run for Children with Cancer UK having met two young men who have battled courageously to overcome the illness,? explained Bev.

?Corbin Bowen, a 16-year-old lad who is one of Welshpool?s Young Fire Fighters, had cancer of the eye, and Jack Owen, a relative of one of Sally?s best friends, had leukaemia. They have both been so strong and inspirational and that is why I wanted to run for Children with Cancer UK.?

Bev, who can often be spotted wearing her high visibility vest when on training runs around Welshpool, says despite the pain of running the marathon distance she is looking forward to competing alongside 35,000 others on April 21.

?I am not a runner, it will probably take? me more than six hours to complete, but I will keep on smiling all the way, that is my motto,? she said.

?The London Marathon is a wonderful fundraiser and one that can be very emotional knowing you are running alongside thousands of people who are raising money for causes close to their hearts.

?It is a fantastic experience and hopefully I can get to the end knowing I have raised a good sum of money for Children with Cancer UK while also helping to raise awareness of this fantastic charity.?

At the weekend Bev, with the help of the town?s young fire fighters, raised ?500 from a charity car wash and cake stall at Welshpool Fire Station.
